Wine Flights

Happy Thirsty Thursday! Throwback Style.

The best way to taste a bunch of different wines at a time without going to a winery -wine flights. My first experience having a wine flight was in Amsterdam on a work trip. I decided to treat myself to a drink at the bar while waiting for my next flight. What else is there to do on a layover besides drink?! I don’t even remember what I ordered the first time. I thought it was kinda cool to try a couple of wines for the price of one full glass. I was so happy about the price that I just chose randomly from the menu and drank whatever the waiter placed in front of me. I got drunk and it tasted like expensive wine so I say that was a good time. But I have to admit this first experience wasn’t fabulous and I probably had some amazing wines in front of me that I don’t even remember.

Fast forward to about 2 years ago. Jasmine and I made plans for happy hour after work. Instead of the typical happy hour places we would normally go to, we decided to try something different. I found a cute little spot near my job that had a good ratings on Yelp. This particular restaurant was well known for their wine because they had a small winery attached to the back which made the convenience of over a hundred different wine selections available. The food was great but what I remember most was the wine flights. Because it was happy hour and drinks were half priced, we each got two different types of flights. Each had three glasses. Over dinner, we shared them and felt pretty buzzed. The portions, if I would have to guess were about two to three ounces.  As shown below, beneath each of the glasses was a description of the flavors, aromas, potency, and origins of each wine.

I have been to about a dozen wineries and wine festivals up and down the East Coast with my husband and with friends over the years. However, this dinner was one of my most favorite times drinking wine because it really helped me understand red wines a little more and it was informative. Normally, at home, I prefer white wine because of the sweetness. But at a restaurant, I might have an occasional red so I need to know what is the best quality. Northern California’s wine country is a few hours away from me. Im itching for a mini vacay so I should make a list of places to review. No time like the present! 🙂

MY BET Experience – Part 2

Sunday before Janelle Monáe, Nicki Minaj, and Diddy performed at the BET Awards, all attention was on the LA Convention Center where day two of the BET Experience events were being held. The place was basically empty when we arrived at 12:45. I guess everyone was trying to get a glimpse of the celebs live on the Red Carpet, which wasn’t easy since the whole thing was fenced off and highly secured. Only those with pre-approved email confirmations could get into the pre-show. On Saturday, the energy was much higher than the previous day. Both days were full of free things to do for people of all ages, but it’s a shame more people didn’t know or care to attend on Sunday.

The COVERGIRL Beauty Lounge was also empty. We walked past the runway and saw a great show of fashion and make-up tutorials. I didn’t stay throughout the whole presentation, but I could tell the intimate setting was perfect for instruction. Notice the empty chairs?

Here I am waiting to see a member of my FAVORITE R&B group, Destiny’s Child. As a true fan, I was appalled at the turn out to hear these great artists speak. This picture was taken only a few minutes prior. The organizers had to ask people to move up to the VIP chairs because there was extra seating up front. Oh Yeah!IMG_4979

Kelly Rowland and Tyrese Gibson discussed their passion for the music industry and their passion for their families. The whole discussion will be aired July 3rd on the BET network.

“I have to raise a great man for a great woman…I just feel like I don’t want him to choose someone unavailable. I always want to be there for him, and I’m enjoying motherhood.”- Kelly Rowland

My BET Experience- Part 1

Since moving to California a little over six months ago, I have been itching to go to an event. Any event would do- at least for now. When I heard the BET awards was being held in L.A. and hosting free events, I just knew I had to be there.

Now here’s the tough part. What to wear!

I am not a brand name girl by any means. But I do understand the quality that comes with certain brands. Realistically, as a SAHM I can’t afford them. But for an event that will be photographed and have the potential for interviews, you got to look your best. I’m not even a celebrity, but I still try to never wear the same outfit twice. Honestly, I just have too many clothes for that. Most of my thrifted items are fun, timeless and can be worn with anything for any event. The time it to look for me to dig through my closet to find a dress or outfit wasn’t that bad. I had to rush; that L.A. traffic is crazy!

I chose this dress I bought from a thrift store back in Maryland. I posted this picture on Instagram a while back. I had no idea when or where I would wear this dress. I hadn’t tried it on since I bought it and I forgot it fit me so well. That’s a perfect buy. No alterations. No extra money!

The event was held at the L.A. convention center near the Staples Center. I had only seen the outside of these buildings before. The security line was getting long when we arrived at 1:15 (after finding parking in L.A.). The security closed the doors right after us because of over capacity. We just made it in to find out the celebrity basketball game had started and was too full. Now this game was my bribe to get my hubby and my son to people watch and snap good pics. I had to find something to do for them ASAP. Their disappointment was real. Of course, it’s my hubby that notices the Xbox gaming center out of the corner of his eye. They also had fun things to do for the kids that was sponsored by Nickelodeon.

Once I saw they were having a blast on their own, it was me time. I “lost” them and made my way over to the other booths. There were so many people and so much to do. The CoverGirl sign caught my eye, and I just had to just get even more glamorous because it was FREE!   The service menu included one of three choices. I chose number 2. I’m not gonna lie; I was elated when the make-up artist said “you already did a good job let me give you a red lip.” She let me keep the Outlast Lipstick and some of their new Super Sizer by LashBlast Mascara she also used on me.

I met some great people while here. The networking opportunities were amazing, and I exchanged some info with a few ladies on those long food truck lines. On my way out of the event, I couldn’t help but get in character and take a pic in front of one of my favorite shows, Being Mary Jane.

Yesterday was great, but I’m eager to see what the live events will look like today for the BET Awards. I’m on my way to the red carpet; hopefully even more exciting things are in store!
